Goal:
To strengthen crew connections by preparing and sharing a meal together once a month.
The Concept
“Bonding Time” is a monthly event where the entire crew helps cook. Instead of the galley team doing all the work, everyone joins in to learn a new skill and socialize.
- Best Foods: Choose recipes that require many people to help, such as dumplings, roti, or gnocchi.
How to Prepare
- Pick a Recipe: Choose a dish that is fun to make. Consider asking a crew member to share a favorite recipe from their home culture.
- Test It First: If you aren’t familiar with the recipe, practice it before the event. You need to be confident enough to teach others.
- Get Ready: Ensure you have all ingredients and tools. If something is missing, find a creative substitute.
- Spread the Word: Tell the crew in advance to get them excited.
- Set the Scene: Use simple decorations or lighting to make the galley feel festive.
Running the Event
- Workspace: Set up a clean, organized table where everyone can sit or stand together.
- Hygiene: Everyone must wash their hands before starting. Provide aprons and caps. If someone is feeling sick, they should not participate.
- Atmosphere: Put on some upbeat music to keep the energy high.
- Instruction: Lead the group through the steps clearly. If a crew member contributed the recipe, let them lead the instruction.
The Meal & Cleanup
- Serving: Serve the food buffet-style or in large plates in the center of the table to encourage sharing.
- Share the Story: Ask the person who chose the recipe to say a few words about what the dish means to their family or country.
- Capture the Moment: Take photos of the crew working together and the final result.
- Enjoy: Focus on the conversation and the break from the daily routine.
